Ozempic 1 mg

Manufacturer: Novo Nordisk
Package: 1 pen
Dosage: 1 mg
Common Names: Ozempic 1 mg, Ozempic, Semaglutide, Semaglutide Injection, Novo Nordisk Ozempic

Info: (UP) Ozempic 1 mg from Novo Nordisk contains semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. Semaglutide mimics the activity of the naturally occurring GLP-1 hormone, which is involved in glucose regulation, insulin secretion, and appetite control. Ozempic is a prescription medicine approved in certain jurisdictions for the treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes, alongside diet and physical activity.

Effects

Blood Glucose Regulation: Semaglutide stimulates insulin secretion in a glucose-dependent manner and reduces glucagon secretion when blood glucose is elevated. These actions help improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Appetite and Food Intake: GLP-1 receptor activation influences appetite regulation and may reduce hunger and energy intake. Semaglutide can also delay gastric emptying, particularly during the initial stages of treatment.

Body Weight: Treatment with semaglutide may lead to weight reduction in some patients through changes in appetite and food intake.

Side Effects

Common adverse effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal discomfort, and reduced appetite. These gastrointestinal effects are often more noticeable when treatment begins or the dose is increased.

More serious potential risks include acute pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, dehydration-related kidney injury, and hypoglycemia, particularly when semaglutide is used with insulin or sulfonylureas. Severe gastrointestinal reactions and delayed gastric emptying may also occur. Semaglutide is contraindicated in patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 under the US prescribing information.

Dosage Range and Duration of Use

Ozempic is a prescription medicine administered by subcutaneous injection, generally once weekly on the same day each week, regardless of meals. Treatment is normally initiated at a low starting dose of 0.25 mg weekly for 4 weeks to reduce gastrointestinal side effects, then increased to 0.5 mg weekly. Depending on individual glycemic control, clinical response, and tolerability, the dosage may be further escalated to a maintenance dose of 1 mg weekly (or up to 2 mg weekly in specific clinical protocols), with the 1 mg strength serving as an established maintenance level rather than an initial starting dose.

Combination with Other Drugs

Semaglutide may increase the risk of hypoglycemia when used with insulin or sulfonylureas, and dose adjustments of these medicines may be necessary under medical supervision. Because semaglutide delays gastric emptying, it may affect the absorption of certain oral medicines. Combining it with other semaglutide-containing products or other GLP-1 receptor agonists is generally not recommended. All prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, and supplements should be reviewed by a healthcare professional before treatment.
