Info: Isotretinoin, first marketed as Accutane in the 1980s, is a powerful medication primarily used to treat cystic acne. It is a vitamin A relative with the most potent sebum production-reducing activity, but its use is severely restricted due to its potential to cause birth defects in pregnant women. Despite this, isotretinoin remains an important tool for advanced acne intervention.

EFFECTS :

Isotretinoin has very interesting actions on the body, most of them are directly related to the treatment of severe acne. It also reduces the production of sebum, which can help reduce oily skin as well as unblock pores. This helps reduce oil production, thereby improving acne symptoms and decreasing the number of new pimples. Furthermore, isotretinoin has anti-inflammatory effects, which lead to increased efficacy in acne treatment.

DOSE RANGE AND DURATION OF USE:

The exact dosage and length of isotretinoin depend on the individual and the severity of the acne. Usually, it is used at a dose of 0.5–1 mg per kilogram of body weight per day. Courses of treatment tend to be run over weeks or months, with most courses being approximately 15 to 20 weeks.

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS:

Possible side-effects of isotretinoin are dryness of the skin, skin and mucosa irritation, sedation, and worsening of acne symptoms in the first few weeks before the eventual improvement. Other less common side effects include changes in mood (such as anxiety or depression), dry eyes, joint and muscle pain, and increased blood lipid levels.

COMBINATION WITH OTHER MEDICINES:

We generally do not prefer using isotretinoin with other medications, especially those with similar effects on the skin, because of potential interactions. Before taking isotretinoin with any other drugs, one must consult a healthcare professional or dermatologist. There are specific medicines that, when taken with isotretinoin, could cause one of these significant problems for you. Combining isotretinoin with specific medications, including oral antibiotics and various acne treatments, may cause an interaction) of the side effect or impact. In addition, isotretinoin has a known interaction with vitamin A supplementation, further raising concern for vitamin A toxicity.

Isotretinoin is recommended to avoid vitamin A at high doses. This study suggests that concurrent administration of isotretinoin with other drugs should be made cautiously yet could be beneficial and be guided by healthcare professionals to minimize the risk of ADRs and enhance clinical outcomes.
